About
"One of the best things about my past life is that I still get quite a few promos that land in my inbox. Most are complete and utter crap from bands who should never have made it out of the garage.. but every so often a diamond shines brightly amongst all the crap. NGUVU (nope, I’d never heard of them either) featuring Julie E Gordon is one such group of artists and their bloody brilliant ep ‘Julie’ is set to land on 19th July.

"Their PR splurge says “You may not see it coming, but you’ll feel it when it hits you.” And never has a truer group of words been spoken.. Hit me square on the jaw and never saw it coming."

- ROB STANLEY

“You may not see it coming but when it hits you, you’ll feel it.” NGUVU: a Swahili term that means Power, Force and Energy. This is also the perfect name for this Northern Groove-heavy Jazzy Powerhouse Collective. Not your typical Manchester band, NGUVU is a genre-blurring collective that defies conventional norms. Birthed straight out of the mind of visionary drummer, composer, and MC, Jamal Lewis-Service, who not only provides the bars but the backbeat, NGUVU is a force that was once a hidden gem in the contemporary music scene. Built upon a combination of Jazz Fusion, Funk, Soul, and Hip-Hop, with a teaspoon of Rock, NGUVU’s style has small shades of Screaming Headless Torsos, Living Colour, The Roots, Nubiyan Twist, Funky Knuckles, Brand New Heavies, Jamiroquai, and Morris Day And The Time, yet it still maintains a sound and Identity that is uniquely theirs. At the heart of their sonic journey lies an unwavering commitment to groove. The band's music is an irresistible invitation to move, a testament to their deep-seated passion, knowledge and application of rhythm. NGUVU's distinctive sound is characterized by intricate musicality, infectious hooks, and a spirit of improvisation that keeps audiences on their feet and coming back for more. NGUVU's impressive musical journey has taken them to prestigious stages across the UK, with a highlight being their electrifying performance at the esteemed Manchester Jazz Festival in 2022 and 2023 (performing at Escape to Freight Island and Band On The Wall Respectively), which earned them a feature as part of the Festival’s Success stories. Another highlight has been their previous support for acclaimed Manchester Reggae/Indie superstars, Jeramiah Ferrari, who gave them a major shoutout post performance. NGUVU's shows create the perfect formula needed to captivate audiences, transcend musical boundaries, and take listeners on a dynamic and unforgettable journey. NGUVU has been able to differentiate themselves massively from the conventional bands, they’re currently working on their latest EP: "NORTHERN SAUCE", set to release this year in late 2025.
